Chapter 5

Dawn

The club is pack with gyrating bodies posing every second on the dance floor tonight. I watch from my seat at a nearby table, sipping my beer and getting bored out of my mind.

I turn to Scarlett. “Why are we here again?”

She laughs. “Because you need a night out and it’s not good to stay home, wallowing in your filth and sweat.”

My eyes roll. “First off, I’m not wallowing. Second, you act like I don’t shower. I shower.”

I take another sip, finishing off my bottle. “And third, you’re not going to get me out on the dance floor. No matter how hard you may try.”

“I wouldn’t dare,” she says. “But I recall a time when you were the one dragging me off kicking and screaming to one of these clubs. My, how things change.”

She grabs a handful of peanuts from a bowl and tossed back her head.

This is her ploy to get me to talk. I ignore it. She should understand why my feelings have changed.

The last time I’ve hooked up with a guy, it has ended terribly. It has taught me that a lot of men are nothing more than immature toddlers who only want to play games. I want nothing to do with those men anymore.

I chew on a handful of peanuts so I won’t be forced to discuss my feelings. Scarlett means well, but it’s hard to talk to a friend about my shitty love life, especially if that friend’s love life is the total opposite of what’s going on with mine.

Looking everywhere but at her, I hope she gets the hint that I don’t want to talk about it. Alas, she’s a persistent woman when she feels the need to be. She touches my forearm to get my attention and pokes at it until I finally look at her.

“There is something I want to tell you,” she starts.

Stifling a sigh, I ask, “What?”

She has a strange smirk on her lips. “Xenos broke up with his girlfriend.”

I arch an eyebrow then quickly drop it. I’m not even interested so I’m not sure why she feels the need to bring it up. “And?”

“And rumor has it that you might have something do with it,” she continues.

Laughter suddenly bubbles out of me. “Well, if that’s the case, then he sure as hell is a bigger fool than I give him credit for. I hardly know the guy. And to end a relationship just because of me? Well, that screams problems.”

I gobble up another handful of peanuts and ponder over what to say. While I’m chewing, I forget the cardinal rule about not eating with my mouth open. “I’m sure you gathered this bit of gossip from Devon?”

She nods.

“Well, you can tell Devon that I’m not interested in who Xenos is or isn’t seeing. He’s is not my problem.” I heave a sigh and secure my purse strap on my shoulder. “Tata!”

“You’re leaving?” She jumps up to stop me. “You can’t.”

“Why not? It’s a free world. Besides, I just want to crawl in bed and pull the covers over my head.
